The Donkeys of Civita di Bagnoregio

Donkeys were once indispensable not only for rural work among the vegetable gardens, vineyards, and olive groves, but also for transporting food and basic necessities. Before the bridge was built in the 1960s, the donkey was the only means of transport to Civita di Bagnoregio, carrying the burden of daily life and the local economy on its shoulders. Loyal and tireless animals, they were part of the family, so much so that they had names like "La Peppa" or "La Rufina."
